Muecke working in her studio in Leipzig
Maj Muecke is a contemporary artist working within painting, drawing and bookmaking. Her works often reference relationships, with portraits of objects of impact. She examines what belongings, people, and historical data mean to her and/or how she can use them to translate her experiences into an image.
“I am very interested in history; in the history of who we are now on our planet, based on the stories that we create out of indications we excavate and declare as facts. In that I am intrigued by the subjectivity of a story. I find the transportation of aspects that appear undeniable a key feature: Anyone can see they're there, yet, they unravel in our minds according to the way we are coded–not just evolutionary, but also by our upbringing, personal experiences, and role in society. I find relationships with these aspects–whatever they might be–in the context of how they reflect who we are, fascinating."
Muecke grew up in Germany. She has a background in communication- and cross media concept design and currently lives and works in Sydney (Australia). She is also part of an artist duo with her sister. Together they make installations and have an interest in public art.
