Muecke working in her studio in Leipzig
Maj Muecke is a contemporary artist working within painting and bookmaking. Her works often reference relationships to personal belongings or are based on experiences in relation to things and how they feel.
“I am very interested in relationships. Relationships to things that have meaning to me and to the people around me. I find inspiration in that in a sense that it makes most of my material. It always works in a way that something resonates with me and I then chase and translate a feeling in my work. A work is finished to me, when I look at it later and recognise what I pictured, when I get the memory straight away. I like to work in series. So I can be like a pendulum, push my examination and work permutatively. I also approach subjects in a documentary way. In doing so, I tend to stay within an abstract aesthetic, as that makes me feel I can stay closer to the idea of something.”
Muecke is best known for her large gestural and multilayered colour compositions. She has a background in communication and cross media concept design and currently lives and works in Leipzig (Germany), where she is also part of an artist duo with her sister making installations and art in public spaces.
